General Cable Launches Fiber Optic Marine Shipboard Cable with ABS Product Type Approval

New Low-Smoke, Zero-Halogen Marine Shipboard & Offshore Fiber Optic Cables

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KENTUCKY, April 27, 2005 — General Cable has been awarded a Certificate of Type Approval (RQS) from ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) certifying that it has met the requirements of ABS Product Type Approval for fiber optic marine shipboard cable. The ABS Type Approval Program required an extensive manufacturing audit, resulting in a Certificate of Manufacturing Assessment.

“The Certificate of Type Approval by ABS is assigned to thermoplastic LSZH heavy-duty breakout cable engineered to meet a series of International Fiber Optic and Materials Standards (IEC), which have demonstrated their suitability for shipboard and offshore markets,” states Chris Pegge, Director of Sales, General Cable. The family of offshore cables includes thermoplastic and thermoset, LSZH and MOR™ Mud Oil Resistant, armored and unarmored constructions. With the ability to process an extensive variety of materials into many cable constructions for sustained and continuous operations in challenging environments, General Cable’s shipboard and offshore fiber optic cable portfolio is a natural choice for selection.”

“The ABS certification is the culmination of many hours of engineering and manufacturing expertise,” said Bob Brunelle, Senior Product Development Engineer, General Cable. “All specialty fiber optic cables are 100% qualification tested in General Cable’s MIL-STD-790 certified laboratory, assuring a high level of performance, quality and reliability. This approval to ABS standards means fiber optic products, which pass rigorous in-house testing, are qualified to meet or exceed the most demanding industry specifications and requirements.”

This endorsement has enabled General Cable to successfully win a contract to supply fiber optic cables for a class of ships that fall under the authorization of ABS. Over the years, ABS has broadened its joint relationship with NAVSEA allowing for expanded technical support and guidance of the Navy’s shipbuilding programs. General Cable’s technical leadership in the development of light-weight, low-smoke, zero-halogen (LSZH) cabling systems has lead to our preferred supplier status within the U.S. Navy for both fiber optic and copper cables.
