General Cable Offers Two Options for 10 Gigabit Networks, GenSPEED® 7000 S/STP and GenSPEED® 6500 STP

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KENTUCKY, April 16, 2007 – General Cable offers two copper cable options designed to deliver 10 Gigabit Ethernet performance over distances of up to 100 meters.  GenSPEED 7000 S/STP is a Category 7 cable that contains four individually shielded copper pairs as well as an overall braid.  This design provides excellent EMI (electromagnetic interference) and RFI (radio frequency interference) immunity as well as 65% crosstalk improvement over standard Category 6 cables.

The individually shielded copper pairs in General Cable’s GenSPEED 6500 STP Category 6A cable provide superior EMI and RFI immunity. This is especially important in environments with electromagnetic and RF sources such as Electrical power wiring and transformers. Both GenSPEED 7000 S/STP and GenSPEED 6500 STP exceed the alien crosstalk requirements in IEEE802.3an and are tested to 600 MHz for the capability of supporting 10 Gigabit Ethernet per the IEEE draft with distances of up to 100 meters.

“We have seen an increased demand for shielded solutions, including our Cat 5e overall shielded, as well as our individually shielded Cat 6A and Cat 7 products,” said Jay Lahman, General Cable’s Business Unit Manager, Premise and Electronics Products.  “As our customers’ throughput demand and networking requirements increase and become more complex, individually shielded solutions provide a means to upgrade with potentially no additional structured cabling investment.  We are positioned to offer a very broad range of product choices to meet the challenges of 10 Gigabit transmission.”
