General Cable Receives ISO/TS 16949 Certification
Highland Heights, Kentucky, July 11, 2006 – General Cable Corporation (NYSE: BGC) received its ISO/TS 16949: 2002 Certification within its Automotive Supply Chain organization from Underwriters Laboratories, Inc® (UL).
In order to receive ISO/TS 16949 Certification, an organization must meet three specific criteria, which include: supplying a TS 16949 subscribing customer; participation in an automotive supply chain; and finally, potentially serving as a supplier to a subscribing TS 16949 customer and having a documented Request for Quote (RFQ). General Cable has successfully met the criteria, as set forth by the International Automotive Task Force (IATF) and administered by the International Automotive Oversight Bureau (IAOB).
The desired ISO/TS 16949 specification is a result of the International Automotive Task Force’s (IATF) initiative to develop a global quality management system for Automotive Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs). DaimlerChrysler, Ford and GM partnered with IATF in the development effort and in 1996, the ISO/TS 16949 Certification was put into place for automotive production within North America, Europe and Asia.
“Our participation in the TS 16949 Certification continues to allow us to build on our strong automotive foundation as we continue to enhance our market leadership position with quality systems that are recognized worldwide,” said Roger Roundhouse, Vice President and General Manager, Specialty Wire Harnesses. “With this important certification, General Cable can now fully participate in the Original Equipment (OE) related markets where we can utilize our experience and expertise that has earned us the title as a market leader in the automotive aftermarket.”
The General Cable Automotive Team was bestowed the Frost & Sullivan Market Leadership Award in November 2005 as the top market participant in the North American ignition wires sets aftermarket. Additionally, the Company’s Altoona, Pennsylvania Automotive Products manufacturing facility received INDUSTRYWEEK’S Best Plants Award in September 2003 as one of the 10 Best Manufacturing Plants in North America.
“The quality system upgrade from ISO 9001 standards to the TS 16949 standards will allow the General Cable Automotive team to further solidify its market leadership position in the aftermarket while positioning us for further growth in markets previously unavailable to us,” conclude Roundhouse.
