TWO GENERAL CABLE PLANTS NAMED FINALISTS IN INDUSTRYWEEK’s 2011 BEST PLANTS COMPETITION

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KENTUCKY, September 26, 2011 – General Cable (NYSE: BGC) has been advised by INDUSTRYWEEK, the leading manufacturing management magazine, that its North American manufacturing facilities located in Lawrenceburg, Kentucky, and Lincoln, Rhode Island have been selected as finalists in the publication's 21st annual Best Plants competition.

“We are excited to have two General Cable plants represented on the INDUSTRYWEEKs Best Plants finalist list this year,” said Mark Thackeray, Senior Vice President, North American Operations. “General Cable’s Lean Manufacturing and Six Sigma initiatives have continued to drive major improvements throughout our Company.  We hope to have another plant or two receive INDUSTRYWEEKs 2011 Best Plants Award and become recognized as one of the 10 best manufacturing plants in North America.”

To be considered for this competition, manufacturing facilities throughout North America had to document and report practices and performance in a number of categories, including manufacturing operations and flexibility, environmental and safety programs, inventory management, productivity, quality and use of technology.  It is from this list of finalists that INDUSTRYWEEK will select the 10 winners of the 2011 Best Plants competition, which will be officially announced in the magazine’s January 2012 issue.

“Being acknowledged as a finalist in INDUSTRYWEEK’s 2011 Best Plants competition confirms the world-class manufacturing capabilities of each of our honored locations,” continued Thackeray.  “When one of our plants receives a top ranking on our internal manufacturing excellence audits, we encourage them to compete for the INDUSTRYWEEKs Best Plants Award.  When they are also recognized externally for operational excellence, it supports our internal findings.”

“These two outstanding General Cable manufacturing facilities join our other honorees from prior years, including: Altoona, Pennsylvania; Franklin, Massachusetts; Indianapolis, Indiana; Malvern, Arkansas; Manchester, New Hampshire; Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan, Canada; Piedras Negras, Coahuila, Mexico; and Tetla, Tlaxcala, Mexico,” continued Thackeray.  “We expect all of our North American facilities to strive for manufacturing excellence and be worthy of competing for industry-leading awards in the future.”
