GENERAL CABLE WORKS WITH U.S. ELECTRIC UTILITY ALLIANCE TO PROMOTE SUSTAINABILITY
HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KENTUCKY, JANUARY 3, 2012 – The Electric Utility Industry Sustainable Supply Chain Alliance was formed by 16 Investor-Owned Utility (IOU) Companies, many of whom are General Cable customers, to promote environmental stewardship and provide value to their customers and shareholders.
Focusing on its non-fuel suppliers, the Alliance's goal is to work with electric utility industry suppliers and other interested parties to improve environmental performance and advance sustainable business practices. Its mission is to develop voluntary consensus standards for the creation of a supply chain that is environmentally responsible, efficient, cost-effective and positively impacts communities.
A major goal of the Alliance in 2012 is for a majority of its suppliers to be able to identify the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and to set a goal for reduction.
The Alliance plans to address GHG emissions through:
- Energy consumption reduction (a key driver of GHG emissions) in Member Utilities’ supply chain operations;
- Products and services sourced by electric utilities; and,
- Education and encouragement of their suppliers to reduce their GHG emissions.
“Preliminary work has shown that many of our suppliers do not know where to focus their efforts when it comes to identifying and reducing GHG emissions,” said Mark Bueltmann, Manager, Sustainable Supplier Development, American Electric Power and Alliance Member. “That is why the Alliance decided to produce a video of a typical evaluation in a manufacturing plant to point out many of the common types of equipment and processes that can quickly and easily be addressed to achieve GHG reduction results.”
As a member of the Green Suppliers Network and as a leading supplier to the Electric Utility market, General Cable volunteered to videotape a sustainability evaluation process inside its DuQuoin, Illinois, manufacturing facility.
“By helping to produce this video, we are assisting manufacturers all over the country implement or improve their sustainable practices,” commented John Frederick, Maintenance Manager, General Cable DuQuoin. “We have been preserving the environment by conserving energy, eliminating or decreasing the use of hazardous materials, reducing scrap and promoting recycling. These actions have been part of our daily work processes since we started our Lean journey more than decade ago. It is part of a continuous improvement culture to always look for opportunities to get better, so we welcomed the Alliance to our plant to conduct a sustainability evaluation.”

The video, in which General Cable plays a leading role, was premiered at the first Utility Industry Sustainability Forum held in Phoenix, Arizona. Going forward, it will be marketed by members of the Alliance and by several members of the federal government to demonstrate what areas can be looked at and to educate viewers on potential next steps.
